Hardship in Homs as unrest takes its toll
With Syria gripped by violence life for residents in the rebel stronghold of Homs has become very difficult. Fuel shortages are leading to long lines at filling stations, as people queue with jerry cans to replenish diminish supplies. At the same time rubbish is piling up in the streets. Meanwhile, across the border in Turkey a camp is filling up with Syrian refugees who have fled the violence. Among them is a Syrian military defector who says he wants the Turkish authorities to establish a safe zone inside Syrian territory where anti-Assad militants could assemble. He said: “We wish a buffer zone will be established. If such a zone is created, it will speed up our progress and will land a huge blow on the Syrian Army.” Ankara has said it is reluctant to intervene, but Turkish foreign ministry officials are reported to have said they could be willing to create such a buffer zone inside Syria if there are massacres, or if Turkey is inundated with refugees.
